Volunteer ‘safe return’ advice. PLUS, an exciting opportunity for Merseyside clubs and organisations to benefit from ‘Volunteer It Yourself’

Sport England are offering guidance for organisations to help them offer a safe return to volunteering.

Volunteers have a vital role to play in making the return to sport and physical activity safe as coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions are eased. So, Sport England has produced some handy guidance to support organisations in creating a safe and supportive environment to encourage volunteers to re-engage, recognising how critical this will be in preparing for the return of activity.

Also on the subject of volunteering…

MSP’s Strategic Lead for Adults & Workforce, Andrew Wileman has been in discussions with Volunteer It Yourself (VIY), which teaches young people trade skills by helping them fix up and repair community buildings like sports clubs and community centres.

Young people are mentored by professional tradespeople and work towards entry-level qualifications as well as further training and employment opportunities. VIY has been going 8 years and has worked with nearly 11,000 young people across the country on over 550 different projects. These projects range from one day building benches or painting walls to months building new changing rooms or repurposing whole buildings!

VIY currently has match funding to work with 225 grassroots sports clubs and spaces that host physical activity across the country over the next 3 years. These projects will enable meaningful building works such as creating female changing facilities, improving accessibility, building cafes/kitchens or wider refurbishment works. These projects will not only improve the club in question but also help boost the skills and employability of local young people from the area who take part.

The project will come at no cost to the club as VIY will work collaboratively to bring further match funding to the project. If you are, or know of, a sports club or space could benefit from a VIY project and are interested in finding out more, please contact tom@teamviy.com for further information.
