Sports organisations in Merseyside are clearly planning for growth and expansion of services, facilities and products available, as the Nation is encouraged to become more active.
Increased participation in sport and physical activity by children, young people and adults will lead to increased demand for leisure opportunities. With this demand comes the need for an enlarged workforce with ever more sophisticated skills, knowledge and competencies.
We need, therefore, to ensure that the sport and physical activity sector in Merseyside has the right people in sport with the right skills, by continually raising our profile as a professional sector with initiatives to help up-skill the workforce, increase employability and encourage continuous professional development.
At a national and regional level SkillsActive, the sector skills council for the active leisure and learning industry, are responsible for taking the lead for skills development on behalf of employers and government.
SkillsActive is the organisation that links employers with training providers, policy makers and individuals to ensure that the importance of skills needs are communicated and addressed, and that workforce development policies really get to the heart of what the active leisure and learning sector needs both for paid staff and the volunteer.

In the North West the Sport and Active Leisure Skills and Productivity Alliance (SALSPA) bring together a range of representatives from key public sector organisations who have the potential to influence and fund skills, employment and business improvement to support the sector.
SALPA is unique to the North West, providing a mechanism for the partners to work collectively to address the key issues and challenges which face the sector as identified in the SALPA Action Plan 2006-2012. To see the Action Plan please click here or visit www.salspanw.com for more information.
Within Merseyside and the North West there are a wide range of opportunities for the workforce, both paid and voluntary, to gain and continue to develop the skills, knowledge and competencies required to work within sport and physical activity. Merseyside Sports Partnership is able to provide information and sign post to the opportunities available.
