Step Into Sport

The main aim of Step into Sport is to encourage more young people to become involved in sport in their local community.

Step into Sport concentrates on training new volunteers, aged between 14 years and 19 years. Step into Sport builds on existing structures and programmes such as Junior Sports Leaders Award and Community Sports Leader Award to encourage and generate greater volunteer links between schools and clubs.

Step into Sport is a joint project funded by Sport England, Youth Sport Trust and Sports Leaders UK and every year, Step into Sport holds a 'Volunteering and Leadership Conference', to encourage and sustain young people's involvement in quality community volunteering placements.

This two-day conference includes a variety of workshops, practical and theory sessions, team building, coaching skills, equity awareness and safety.

Merseyside Youth Games

The Merseyside Youth Games is an annual event that invites sporting youngsters from the six boroughs of Merseyside to compete and represent their borough.

The Games plays host to a variety of different sports, and competitors range from all levels of sporting abilities. The games were originally formed in 1992 and involved the then 5 local authorities with a total of 1200 competitors. Since then the number of sports have grown as well as the number of competitors to over 3,500. While year round trials for the games involve over 60,000 young sports people.

As well as being an excellent opportunity for young people to compete in such a wide range of sports it also provides any one who is willing, the chance to volunteer in a variety of tasks. Because, without the help of the hundreds of volunteers, the Youth Games would simply not be able to run.

Merseyside Community Games

Merseyside Community Games is an event to encourage those young people within the community who are seen as 'socially excluded' to engage in sport and cultural activities.

The event consists of organised competitions in a number of sports and taster sessions. In order to recruit competitors for the Merseyside Community Youth Games, the Youth Service organise local tournaments. These local tournaments establish the best team for each sport, and the best team to represent their local authority at the Merseyside Community Youth Games.
