Coaching

Coaching is central to the development of sport at every level. Coaches provide the process and inspiration to motivate and develop sporting athletes. The Government's vision for coaching is that "by 2012 the practise of coaching in the UK will be elevated to a profession acknowledged as central to the development of sport and the fulfilment of individual potential." Coaching is one of the most rewarding aspects of sport, and is central to the development of any sport. It is estimated that 500,000 people coach regularly in the UK, in environments ranging from the school playground to the international arena, however, coaching is a continuous process and as such needs to be developed.  There are many benefits to coaching which are listed below:
  • Increased sense of purpose and sense of fulfilment
  • Improved communication skills and personal effectiveness
  • Discover a work/life balance that is satisfying and fulfilling
  • Build confidence and self esteem
  • Build stronger relationships
  • Discover creative ways for dealing with challenges

In order to take up the challenge of developing a high quality network of coaches and professionalised coaching system Sports Coach UK was tasked at the end of 2005 to develop a UK Coaching Framework (formerly The UK Action Plan for Coaching) in partnership with governing bodies of sport and the key funding agencies: UK Sport, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Home Country Sports Councils, the Department for Education and Skills, the British Olympic Association, Youth Sport Trust and SkillsActive.
