The foundations of the Merseyside Primary Games (MPG) were laid in the early
1990's when the five original Local Authorities of Merseyside came together
to stage the first Games. MPG is now the largest youth sport event in Merseyside,
offering year round coaching, school trials and local authority competitions
prior to the main event.
MPG has reached over 60,000 young people annually for
over 15 years and has been the catalyst to an increasing realisation of the
benefits gained from working together.
This has resulted in like-minded organisations joining the
partnership, and has generated a significant amount of investment to develop
a vibrant sporting infrastructure of clubs, coaches and volunteers underpinned
by strong school to community links, allowing for more clearly defined and
better supported sporting pathways for young people to excel in their chosen
sport (s) if they so wish. Merseyside Primary Games has the following aims:
• To provide a multi-youth sport event for primary school children on Merseyside
• To provide a sense of identity between participants and the Local Authority they represent
• To promote the link between primary school sport and sports development opportunities
• To promote sporting opportunities regardless of social and environmental constraints
• To promote "youth" games tournaments
for primary schools
• To establish the Merseyside Primary Games (primary ages) as a permanent annual event
