Don’t be a Christmas pudding! Wirral NHS workers encouraged to be more active

NHS workers from across the Wirral are signing up to the ‘Don’t be a Christmas pudding!’ challenge, as part of MSP’s Active Workplaces programme to encourage employees to be more active and less sedentary in the workplace.

The challenge runs for six weeks in the lead up to Christmas, starting on the 1st November and finishing on the 13th December – helping you to feel great and get in shape in time for the festive period.  The aim is to add up as many steps as you can over the six week period by setting yourself one of the following targets:

  • 100,000 steps to Christmas
  • 250,000 steps to Christmas
  • Half a million steps to Christmas
  • A million steps to Christmas

You don’t need to join a gym or spend hours training for this challenge – it’s just about building more walking in to your day by doing things like taking the stairs instead of the lift, or going out for a ten minute walk on your break.  You’ll soon start to notice that building more walking in to your daily routine can help improve your mood, give you more energy, reduce tiredness, reduce stress and improve your self-esteem.

Taking part is easy and can be done through three quick steps:

  1. Sign up at
  2. Count your steps (via your Fitbit, smartphone or pedometer)
  3. Enter them via the Workplace Challenge website or app

Don’t worry if you don’t have a pedometer – you’ll be able to pick one up from your Trust/Practice.  Pedometers have been provided for free by the Wirral Heart Beat charity, but you are welcome to make a small donation to help the organisation’s work.

Your steps will also be added up to a total for your Trust/Practice so that we can find out who is the most active Wirral NHS organisation!  There will also be prizes given out throughout the challenge for staff who regularly log the amount of steps that they do.

The challenge is being coordinated by MSP and is completely free to join in with – if you have any questions or need help in joining in then please contact them via or 0151 728 1811.

Sign up to the challenge today at  and you’ll be sent an email with details of how to join in and top-tips to help you reach your target!
