Youth Sport Trust employed a team of Competition Managers for each county across England. The roles are funded by DfEs and DCMS to provide a School Sport Competition Structure consisting of local delivery leading to county, regional and national competitions. The vision is to help to maximise the opportunities and the legacy for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games. We aim to influence PE and School Sport to increase participation in high quality competition and produce life-long participation in sport.

Every state school in the country belongs to a School Sports Partnership, of which there are 14 in Merseyside. Competition Managers are a new part of the School Sports Partnerships Infrastructure and will closely work with National Governing Bodies of Sport, Sports Clubs and Competition deliverers to establish local delivery of school competitions that feeds into the National Competition Framework as directed by its’ Governing Body of Sport.

National Competition Framework

Youth Sport Trust is working with 21 National Governing Bodies of Sport to establish their Competition Frameworks. Each Framework will expand opportunities to ensure that there is a consistent and clear pathway for young people of all ages in sport to reach their full potential. The Framework has been structured to link in with the principles of Long Term Athlete Development to ensure that competitive opportunities are appropriate for the age and ability of the young participants.

A further 6 sports will be coming on board next year, these are:

Our Purpose:

  • To increase participation
  • To identify and develop talent
  • To ensure consistent local delivery leading to County, Regional and National delivery according to the National Competition Framework
  • To extend opportunities for all young people to compete in sport
  • To work as an integral part of the School Sports Partnership to help to deliver the 5 Hour Offer and will extend the opportunity to engage in competition.

We aim to:

  • Implement central venue leagues in order to reduce time constraints for organisation of competitions e.g. transport, staffing etc
  • Introduce B and C competition and league to reduce time constraints (as above) and to increase the number of young people able to take part.
  • Realign district and area competition into SSP competition to fit with National competition structures and pathways
  • Continue to develop strong school/club links.

In Merseyside there is 1 Senior Competition Manager to oversee the County Development. There are also 7 Competition Managers to develop each of the six areas of the County (2 in Liverpool).
