On Monday 25th September, Woolton Swimming Club’s Don Robinson was presented with Swim England North West’s “Services to Aquatics” award at a meeting of the Merseyside Swimming Clubs Aquatic Network.
Congratulations to Don Robinson, he is their longest serving member and Club Secretary, who won the award last week. Don joined Woolton Swimming Club as Chief Coach in 1977 and has since helped thousands of children and adults in the Liverpool area to both learn to swim and go on to greater achievements.
Don Robinson with his Service to Aquactics award staff at Austin Rawlinson Leisure centre helped celebrate Don’s achievement
His services to swimming began long before he joined the club. He first started teaching with Everton Swimming Association in 1954 at Dovecot baths when his brother talked him into helping out.
After teaching there for a few years, he was called up for National Service until 1961, before returning home to Liverpool and joining Toxteth Swimming Club as a teacher.
Don travelled across the country learning his trade as a swimming teacher and coach. He attended Loughborough College to complete his advanced teacher course and became a Royal Life Saving Society examiner in 1976. In the years that followed he passed his Advanced Teaching course and Preliminary Club Coach award before joining Liverpool City Council as a Swimming Coach until 1985.
He continued his development as a teacher and coach and gained a Diploma in Sports Psychology from Newcastle College in 1998 and then two years later passed his Sports Coaching Course at the same College.
In 2002, Don’s services to swimming and sport were finally recognised after he received the Lancashire County Swimming and Water Polo Association’s award for the “Development of Swimming” in the region. He also received a Letter of Commendation from the Liverpool Lord Mayor in the same year for his service to the community.

Don will now be entered into the shortlist for the National award and has been invited to the awards ceremony in Birmingham on the 11th November. Tickets are on sale for the national awards and you can find out more information on Swim England’s page.
