Community: Sportivate

A new National Lottery funding programme has been announced by Sport England called ‘Sportivate’. The Sportivate programme is part of the ‘Play’ strand of Sport England’s London 2012 mass participation legacy programme ‘Places People Play’, a £135 million initiative made possible by the Government’s National Lottery reforms.
The aim of this programme is to increase opportunities for 14 - 25 year olds to participate regularly in sport. It will target those within this age group either not choosing to participate in sport during their own time, or doing so for a limited amount of time. This target group was selected because research has shown that the period in which people leave full time education and start to lead more independent lives is when many stop, and do not resume, regular sports participation (CCPR Sport and the Community: The Report of the Wolfendon Committee on Sport 1960 London). By transitioning participants to settings in which regular sporting opportunities are available (within the structure of their newly found independence) Sportivate will play a part in promoting long-term behaviour change by opening up new and exciting opportunities to them.
The programme targets will commence between 2011 - 2015 with a national aim of ensuring 296,257 participants within the age range completing activity sessions and ensuring, that 118,503 participants continue to take part in a form of activity regularly. Within Merseyside, the targets over four years are 11,280 participants, 9,470 of which will be retained in sport and physical activity. A total of £780,660 has been allocated for delivery of this programme.
