Sport & Physical Activity Alliances

What are they?

Sport and Physical Activity Alliances (SPAA’s) are essentially a group of local ‘deliverers’ of sport and physical activity whose objective is to increase participation, widen access and have more success in sport and physical activity locally.

By identifying local gaps in provision the SPAA’s find appropriate solutions and are accountable for this local investment.

Why have they been set up?

Local sport and physical activity alliances are not a new concept. They have evolved from the recognition that organisations at a local level, with similar objectives, can achieve more if they work together.

Funding

The funding for the SPAA’s has come from the Community Investment Fund – Sport England’s Regional Investment Strategy - this equates to over £2,100,000 to be divided between the six local SPAA’s; Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral. SPAA’s also will be expected use this Sport England funding as leverage to generate more investment locally at a ratio of 2:1.

How will it work?

Local SPAA’s will need to show how collective planning is contributing to the following objectives:

To contribute to an increase the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of 2 hours in high
quality P.E. and school sport per week
To contribute to a halt in the increase of obesity amongst children under 11 by 2012
To contribute to an increase in the take up of sporting opportunities by adults and young people
   (16 and above)

They will contribute to 5 out of the 7 following objectives as set out by the National Framework for Community Sport (Single Delivery System for Sport) Click here for more information on this.

They will also contribute to the core delivery system key performance indicators:

Increase number of new participants
Increase number of coaches
Increase number of new volunteers
Increase number of members in local clubs
Increase number of talented performers
Improve standards in sport
Increase leverage into sport
